  Prologue

“Bill Masters better not even think about reneging on this contract. He gave us his word.” Joe Stanton pressed his palm against the rich grain of the leather chair outside Masters’s office, waiting for the big man to usher them inside. Joe studied his two brothers for their reactions.

Rod, the youngest of the three, slammed his hand on the chair arm. “He’ll sign the damn papers or we’ll take him to court for breach of contract.”

Rod had been against the sale at first. He said he was proud of the company they’d built together and hated breaking up their team. However, Rod understood Frank and Joe had bigger financial ambitions and promised not to stand in their way.

The middle brother, Frank, stretched out his long legs and shrugged, looking cooler than a running spring in winter. He wore his signature blue striped Armani suit with a fancy red hankie sticking out of his jacket pocket. To hear him tell it, he was best looking of the three.

“No use speculating and getting pissed off until you have the facts,” Frank said.

God, he sounded just like Dad, God rest his soul.

Masters, CEO of Sensual Pleasures, had offered to buy Sex Toys for U for five million bucks. The brothers had started the company four years ago, and their initial investment of fifty thousand each would earn them close to two million per partner. Not bad. Joe appreciated his return on investment especially since they’d grown up poor in rural Louisiana, but he was smart enough to know he’d run through that amount fast if he didn’t have a day job to keep him busy. Frank, on the other hand, was a tightwad. He could make two mil last twenty years if he wanted to.

The door to Bill Masters’s inner sanctum opened and the CEO waved them in. Dressed in a tailored black suit, silk shirt, and a striped tie, the sixty-year-old’s lined face was unreadable. Damn.

Joe stood, tugged on his jacket, pressed his hands down his trousers, and followed his two brothers inside. Masters closed the door behind them. While Joe had been in the office once before, its elegance still surprised him. It had lush wool carpet, charcoal walls with paintings worthy of the Louvre, and large leather chairs any US president would be happy to sit on. The chrome lamps on Masters’s expansive mahogany desk were the only hint of the modern style that pervaded the rest of the building.

Masters motioned them to take a seat. “I won’t beat around the bush.”

Here goes. He’s taking back his offer. I know it.

“Due to health reasons, I need to retire, and soon. I’ve been impressed with your work, gentlemen, and not only do I still plan on buying your company, I’d like to hire two of you to head up the newly merged company.”

Joe’s stomach somersaulted at the dream-come-true offer. Running a multibillion dollar industry would solve all his problems. Wait a minute. He didn’t want all three? He refused to pit the brothers against each other. “Why just two?”

He shot a quick glance at Rod and Frank. Rod’s eyes had widened perceptibly, but Frank looked way too relaxed, like he’d been told gas prices went up another penny.

“Carl Winters, my chief financial officer, and I run the company, but the organization has become unwieldy for the two of us. Carl stays, but I could use two men to replace me.” He held up a finger.

The do not speak signal didn’t stop Joe from stating what was on his mind. “I want to negotiate.”

“Hear me out. Before you go
to war with each other over which two of you will be chosen, there’s one caveat to the deal that might make you change your mind about selling.”

There was always a catch. His two brothers zeroed in on him. “Which is?”

“My daughter, Jillian, will not only continue to work here but will also be a voting member on the board.”

Joe’s chest caved, but not enough to be a telltale sign of relief. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say that shouldn’t be a problem.” He’d never met the daughter, but he’d learned she had a PhD in chemistry and rarely left the lab. It was her life. She’d invented most of the scents, aromatherapy oils, and body oils but didn’t involve herself in the day-to-day activities. She was a real loner.

“Good.” Bill paced in front of them, acting as if he’d given his decision a lot of thought. “My daughter will decide who stays, who goes.”

Frank leaned forward. “Why? She a better judge at reading income statements and balance sheets than you?”

“That’s a definite no, but here’s my dilemma. My daughter doesn’t date. She’s twenty-nine and married to the job. She claims not to be a virgin, but her experience with men is probably limited.”

  Rod’s lower lip dropped.

Masters continued. “There is no way she can give any guidance to our company that’s all about sensual pleasures unless she understands what sex and desire are.”

Joe’s chin ducked inward. What the fuck was this guy talking about? “You want us to date her?” He had to be kidding.

“In a manner of speaking, yes. I’ve done my homework. None of you are married or in a committed relationship.” A small smile caught his lips.

How the hell had he learned that tidbit?

“I’ve rented out the entire Catalina Spa just east of Tucson for one full week, starting May 12. It’s exclusive and very isolated in the middle of a mountain range. Only the technicians, waiters, and grounds people will be there. I’d like you three to teach my daughter what she needs to know. After all, you are the experts in sex toys, are you not?”

  Joe nearly spit. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. You have two weeks to come up with a plan before I deliver my daughter there. I don’t care what you three have to do or what you use, but I want her needy and horny after her one-week experience. Tease her, tempt her, and draw her out of her shell so much that she lusts after you and every other male with a working dick. Can you three handle that?”

Frank spoke up. “Yes, sir. We most certainly can.” It was curious that Frank’s gaze remained on Masters and not on him or Rod.

“Good. Just to be clear, the man my daughter wants the most will become the new CEO of Sensual Pleasures. The second most will be his VP.” He held up a finger. “There are rules, mind you. While at the resort, Jillian can never learn who you three really are, or that I’m basically propositioning you to fuck her. Make up backgrounds, do what is needed, but bring my daughter back with an understanding of what a woman wants and how a man can satisfy her. I don’t want you to force her to do something she’s against, but if she’s anything like her mother, there is a vibrant woman underneath her lab coat.” Bill crossed his arms. “Any further questions or doubts?”

  Chapter 1

  Two weeks later

When her cell went off in the middle of the delicate experiment, Jillian Masters ignored the call, despite seeing DAD splashed across the screen. She was in the middle of testing a new polymer base that might revolutionize how condoms fit as well as increase their flexibility, and she didn’t need the distraction of talking to her father. She turned on the last Bunsen burner and dipped the eyedropper into the gooey liquid. The phone continued to ring.

“You going to get that?” Clarissa, her lab tech and best friend, nodded to the phone.

“It’s only Dad. It’ll go to voicemail in a sec.” Jillian wiped the sweat from her forehead. With three burners going, the heat assaulted her. Clarissa somehow managed to stay cool and pretty.

“He never calls unless it’s really important.”

True. “All right. Can you take over then? Put three ccs of the resin into my base and heat it to a boil. Then let it cool.” She slipped off the latex gloves, pushed the goggles onto her forehead, and pressed the speaker button. “Hi, Dad.”

“Come to the office now.” He was his usual rough and gruff self, but what else was new?

“Sure. Something wrong?” He only made a command like that when she’d messed up, which he accused her of doing all the time. He had no issue with her scientific work, just with every other aspect of her life.

“No. Just come.” The phone went dead.

Clarissa’s eyes widened, but she continued to dip the dropper into the liquid. “What do you think he wants?”

“I haven’t the foggiest.” Jillian didn’t like her father summoning her any time of day, but she didn’t want to create a scene by telling him no in front of another worker. “Last time he called me in, he wanted my opinion on the quality of some stupid sex toy. A nipple chafer, I think it was called. My God, it looked like a barbaric torture device.” Her face heated up.

  Clarissa giggled. “He asked you?”

“Go figure. Maybe he was too embarrassed to ask his sixty-year-old secretary. He talked about purchasing some autoerotic company that made adult toys. He believed if we combined our cream and lotion company with the sex toy company, we’d have a lock on the sex industry. That part of his idea actually made sense. He wanted to know if I had any experience with such a product, and if I did, did I think the chafer was any good.” She waved a hand. “As if I’d know.”

  “You said that?”

“Not exactly. I told him I had no idea whether a woman would like having her nipples rubbed raw. He looked disgusted and told me the merest puff of air crossing the tip would intensify my sexual pleasure tenfold. Once a man nibbled and licked my breasts for any length of time, I’d be climbing the walls. Can you imagine how uncomfortable that conversation was, talking about sex with my dad?”

“Yuck. My father would never have asked me anything like that. Did he act embarrassed at least?” Clarissa placed the readied tube in the holder over the fire.

“You’d think, but no. Dad pulls no punches.” Jillian placed her lab goggles on the counter. “I guess I should hurry. He’s not the patient type.”

  “Don’t we all know it.”

Jillian hiked up three floors, breezed past his secretary, and knocked on his door.

“Come in and close the door.”

She made sure it latched closed. “What’s up?”

“I’ve decided you need to get laid.”

Every muscle tightened, and her breath lodged in her throat. “Excuse me?” That was so not what she’d expected him to say at all.

  “I’m sick, Jillian.”

She did a quick scan. His face was its usual tan and his eyes appeared clear. “Of what? Me not being married yet and popping out a couple of kids for you to spoil?” She clamped a hand over her mouth. “I’m sorry. That wasn’t nice.”

“No, it wasn’t, but I probably deserve it. I’ve been preoccupied lately.”

More like for the last twenty-one years.

He tapped his chest. “I have two clogged arteries and my kidneys aren’t working like they should. I need to step down as CEO.”

Shock raced up her arms and attacked her heart. Her dad was infallible, strong, handsome, and all knowing. She rushed over to him and gave him a hug. “Oh, Daddy. Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” If anything happened to him, she’d be lost. “How serious is it? Can’t the doctors fix you?” He didn’t return her hug nor answer her questions. Both reactions stung, but then again, he’d never been the demonstrative type. She backed up and faked straightening his perfectly tied tie. “I’ve told you over and over that you work way too hard.” After Mom died, he’d thrown himself into creating the largest pleasure company in the US, leaving little time to spend with his only child. “What can I do?”
r />   “Once I take my leave, I want you to sit on the board. I’ll be bringing in a new crop of experts very soon to take over my job.”

She pushed out a breath. For a moment, she feared he’d ask her to be in charge. Her lab was her safe domain. She never wanted to leave. “Okay.” She could handle an occasional meeting.

  “Sit down.”

Not wanting to upset him, and because her legs weren’t willing to hold her after his unexpected news, she did as he instructed. The pain of being eight surfaced again. At dinner one night, he’d told her Mom had died and that she wouldn’t be coming home again. Ever.

He paced. “I need someone knowledgeable to head up marketing. Someone who understands what women want, someone who believes in passion, in love.” He nailed her with a stare. “Not some frigid woman who can’t seem to find her way out of the chemistry lab.”

Her heart nearly stopped. If she could have pulled the ice pick out of her chest, she would have. “You don’t know anything about me.” Nor had he taken the time to find out either. “There are reasons why I stay in the lab and don’t date. I like it there. I’m good at my job. This frigid woman has developed excellent products already.” The bitter words nearly burned her tongue, but the moment she said them a mixture of regret and relief poured in. “I like to research the products, not market them.”

“I’m not asking you to run the company, but I do want your opinion heard on the company’s direction. That requires you to get some experience under your belt.”
